Book Love

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Holy smokes, it still haunts me. In a good way. The narrator is Death. But a Death that most of us would not envision. Death tells us the story of a little girl in Germany during WWII who goes to live with foster parents. The perspective is ... ingenious. The story is beautiful. I cried and cried and wish there was more. I almost wish I hadn't read it, so I could read it again for the first time.

Any suggestions for another good book?

i also loved the book thief. on a very different note, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a great fun read despite the title. and you can't go wrong with These is My Words.

I'm adding it to my wish list right now.

My all time favorite is about books too: The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Luis Zafon.

Agreed lovely book. Such beautiful characters. Thank heavens for authors in our world.

A Thousand Splendid Suns has similar themes but with a completely different culture. Also made me cry my eyes out.

I've heard good things about 'The Shadow of the Wind'...i like getting recommendations...a couple wonderful books that I've read--" The Fledgling" by Octavia Butler and "The Woman and the Ape"bye Peter Hoeg. Its been a long time since I've read such affecting books but the above two are amazing.

I just finished a great book called "Same Kind Of Different As Me." It is about a homeless man and a wealthy couple and how they change each other's lives. Great read. Now I will pick up "The Book Thief!"

I am reading The Book Thief right now. Loving it. Makes me want to go on a bike ride through Germany and steal apples.
Other faves... Middlesex (Jeffrey Eugenides), Time Travelers Wife (Audrey Niffenegger), A home at the end of the world ( Michael Cunningham) and A Confederacy of Dunces (John Kennedy Toole).

Meghan,Christy, Lrc, Lizzie - adding those. Aimee, also loved A Thousand Splendid Suns. Karyn, I liked TTW, I need to add the others to my list except for A Confederacy of Dunces. I always finish books I start, even if I don't like them and this book took about 12 years off my life just to finish. But I know lots have loved it.
Keep the suggestions coming.

I read the special Time Michael Jackson commemorative issue on the airplane today. SOOOOO fascinating. Seriously. Read it. Then we jammed hard to MJ songs on the 3 hour drive that followed the plane ride.

I'm reading Pillars of the Earth. It's super.

I, too, loved The Book Thief. Such a breathe of fresh air from a readers perspective. The narrator couldn't have been more intriguing and his language and capacity for story telling during one of the World's most horrific wars was captivating to say the least. Great review on this book.

As another follower said, I also loved These Is My Words. Just finished Lisa See's Snow Flower and the Secret Fan which was a wonderful look at intimate female relationships in 19th century China. I also just finished reading Geraldine Brooke's Year of Wonders, which is about the Bubonic Plague desimating a high mountain village in mid 1600 England. It is loosely based on a true story. Such a sad and haunting story as well...
