Across the Universe

Okay, please don't laugh at me, but I have this idea that I want to share. It could easily be dismissed as hokey, but if you can be open minded enough to hear me out, you may discover a powerful new tool in your life.

We are all familiar with The Secret. I've never read it (I have seen parts of the movie), but I think I understand the basic concept...your thoughts become your behavior, your behavior becomes your reality. Whatever you want - put it out there in your mental process and you will attract it to you.

I stepped my New Years goal setting up a notch this year. Instead of saying a few things I wanted to achieve, I tried this activity at the suggestion of my boss/mentor. The idea is that you decide what you want to accomplish and write yourself a letter to be read at the end of the year as though you accomplished all of it. Example: "Dear Dove, Right on for having a RAD year. You stopped burning dinner and read all the books that have been sitting on your nightstand for years..." Those were obviously not my real goals, but give you an idea of how the project works. Come to think of it, though, maybe I should add that book goal to my letter.....

The life coach who suggested the idea to my boss said you should put it in a fancy envelope, seal it & put it in a place you will see it every day. Then, at the end of the year you bust it open & see how well you did. I think I will modify the process by reading the letter occasionally to remind myself of what I need to be putting out there in the universe.

So I spent a little bit of time working on my letter. I left it alone for about a week and when I returned to it and reread it I realized maybe I was biting off more than I could chew. I'm doing the single mom thing, working full time & frankly don't have much spare time/energy. I thought about getting rid of some of my aspirations, but then considered that those limiting beliefs were in direct opposition to the law of attraction. If I believe that I can't accomplish my goals then I certainly won't. With these two diametric ideas crawling through my brain I was stumped on how to proceed so I consulted the afore mentioned life coach.

Her suggestion was to keep all the things in my letter that I want to attain, but to also include how easy it was to accomplish them and how I did it without adding stress in my life. Brilliant. The funny thing is that up until she said that I was having so much stress at work that I thought my brain was going to melt & drip out my ear. After she said that I CHOSE not to let it stress me and affect me physically. It totally worked.

So as someone who wants to make the world a better place, I want to put this idea in your head for you to capitalize on if you wish.

Hokey? Maybe. (Consider keeping this on the down low in certain social circles if you are sensitive to snide comments & laughter) Worth a try? Absolutely.

Now excuse me while I work on attracting this:

I haven't read the book or seen the movie...but I did have a discussion with a friend recently who had seen the movie.

Seems I knew I did almost exactly what the book said to do a few years ago...and it worked!

I wrote a list for myself...about something very very important to me. I took a long time writing it, after having lived without what it was I was writing about for a long time. I meditated on that list. I imagined that the list was a real representation of my life. I imagined it every day. Sometimes in the morning and at night. But I did it every day...and it worked. It of course took effort on my part. But I think it's proof that energy follows thought. Or prayer, or mediation, or whatever term works for you. That list is now my reality and I've never been happier.

I like that idea, writing things down in a letter to yourself. I should do that. But I agree with you- I need to look at the letter every once in a while to remind myself of my goals. Thanks for writing about this!

Such brilliant insight. I love the idea, and can see how my life can be simplified and enjoyed so much more if I implement some of these things. I especially love that you are working on attracting that saweeeet car into your life. Seriously, I am sure you can make it happen! Just think positive thoughts…. :)

Okay, I’m in. I am even going to buy special paper and envelope. And I agree with the opening and reading every so often, my memory is horrid. Thanks Dove.

I absolutely believe in this concept.

A few years ago, (about the time I turned 30) I totally reevaluated my goals and aspirations. It took a couple of weeks to really think about the things I wanted in my life enough to actually name them. I then took those goals and found pictures to represent them. I have them in a frame that hangs in my bathroom.

I look at that frame everyday. Sometimes I will add little things that make me happy, like a card from a friend, or an awesome quote I have discovered. Three years later, a few of those goals have come true. A few will take a long time to fulfill, (like being a fun and active grandma) but I acknowledge that the choices I make today will affect those distant goals.

Good luck with your goals, Dove. I hope to see you this summer driving up in your red Audi. :)
