1. The perfect night out goes like this...

Hmm, the setting could be hard to choose here... but it would definitely be a warm, breezy evening. Either a sidewalk cafe in NYC or the patio of my best friend or sister... twinkle lights, some bouncy jazz or Féla, candles and the company of sis, bf and their significant others and my hubby. Cocktails to start, and a three hour meal in courses doused with amazing, rich wines and conversation that spawns belly laughter. This is followed by a deep sleep, and waking up past 9am with my daughter staying over at Grandma's house. A fun night out is always more fun when you can sleep in a little.

A warm summer evening. Surroundings that stimulate inspiration. Fresh air filling our lungs. Great food filling our bellies. A new wine. Amazing music. And long hours of conversations with friends and family filling our souls. 

2. Best thing about working with my sister is...

She is amazingly creative and intuitive and can make anything... beautiful. She has a magic touch with creating an alluring environment.... whether it is a brand to experience or the interior of a home. So working with her, I like to think, allows me to learn by osmosis. I try to just suck it all in. It is also such a gift to be able to spend so much time with my sister... I feel that it has brought us closer, in a unique type of way, that allows us to see that 'working' side of each other many family members rarely get to experience. Honestly, its just so nice working with her... there isn't anyone else I'd rather work with.

Knowing that pretty much any idea we come up with will eventually come to fruition and better the lives of our families, and sometimes with very little work or expended effort. 

It's a little magical really... we may share an idea in a passing conversation then months will go by and without even realizing it the idea will have taken form. We'll notice it and say "hey look.. we talked about that months ago and now here it is!" That doesn't happen in other working arrangements I've been in. I think it has a lot to do with our connection. We plant seeds and the good energy makes them grow. 

3. What is the music that defines you?  One band?  Even better, what band could the world do without?

OH boy... this is a hard one. I love music, and have been quite enraptured with it since I was a youth. I love all types, from bluegrass to jazz, to punk, to hip hop and classical. There isn't one type of music defines me because my mood defines the type of music I feel like listening to. That is it's beauty, afterall. I find a good song or stretch of tunes can truly inspire any creation, be it a good meal or a design that was in a rut. Right now, since summer is approaching, I am very much into reggae, dub, rumba catalana, and afrobeat... particularly Féla Kuti. It just transports me to another time and somewhere tropical, which is nice if you can't get there very often. A band the world could do without? Kesha... although you couldn't technically call her a band.

Oh man, that's a tough one. Music is such an integral part of my being, and my musical tastes are so broad and varied that I doubt there is a single band that can really define who I am. I can start a day with Yo-Yo Ma, spend my lunch hour with Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, late afternoon coffee with Flo Rida and evening wine with Zeppelin. I guess what really feeds my soul is great jazz though. 

I will say - I have a teenage daughter and I never thought I would be the one to complain about "the kids these days," but man... if I hear one more artist who is hiding behind auto tune and the same club beat I might lose it. That's what the world can do without. Auto tune. It's completely devoid of soul. Ick. It's time to the music industry to get creative again instead of churning stuff out of the marketing machine. If we're not careful we're going to raise a generation of musical robots.

4. You are being whisked away on the perfect vacation, where to?  And what 5 things are a must to have with you?

Ahh, vacation. It's been a long time. Again, this could change yearly depending on my mood, but right now I'd say Greece, when its hot, on the Mediterranean beach. Five things I must have: 1) my husband, 2) endless carafes of wine, 3) sunscreen, 4) my camera, 5) lip gloss

Doesn't really matter where as long as there are new, beautiful things to see and learn about. That can happen anywhere really. Beach or mountains. Large metropolis or rolling countryside. Even dives in small town USA. 

Must haves: 

1) A good pair of walking shoes. 

2) Enough cash to enjoy great food and a decent bed.

3) A camera

5) Email

5. 2010 may be the best year ever because...

We will be adding to our family... and possibly, starting over in a new location. Change is fun and keeps you young.

We are the masters of our fate for the first time.. well.. ever. We've experienced enough in our work and our lives now (yes, we're of a certain age) that we have the knowledge and connections to make pretty much ANYTHING happen. All it will take is the vision and the stubbornness to push them through. And yes.. we have plant of both. ;)

6. How did you guys come up with the concept and how did you get started?

 (Tiff) In all our dreaming and discussion of working together over the years, we have always expressed mutual interest in doing something 'good' with our business... giving back in some way. So, in January 2010, soon after we launched Handshoe Design Collaborative, I began a small promotional project for a close friend. While sketching out ideas, I developed the 2010love mark and immediately felt like I had something bigger... with potential for growth. I quickly sent it to Leslie asking her... "Hey, do you think people would wear this on a t-shirt?" Her response was, "YES." We saw an immediate campaign that could inspire people to do what we had just decided to do: make a positive change starting in 2010. So we printed some shirts, did a photoshoot, launched a blog, set up an Etsy shop, twitter account and facebook page all within two weeks... and began talking about 2010love... a lot.

(Leslie) Yes, we had been talking for years about how to create a working environment as designers that would allow us to create work that really mattered — to us, and to the world. We’d tossed around ideas for a long time, then when Tiff came up with the mark, it was as if everything magically coalesced. All of our ideas suddenly had a face, and the potential for growth started to identify itself. Sometimes the best ideas happen organically. Serendipity is a good thing.

Giveaway - Autumn Dame

I am so excited about this giveaway.  Mari from Autumn Dame has been patient with me over the last couple of weeks and I so appreciate it.  Autumn Dame is a clothing shop that has handmade creations that are so fresh and lovely, I want one of everything.  And my one of everything would be different from your one of everything because although there are similar items, they are all made by hand, one at a time, so each vary slightly or more from each other.  Cool, eh?

2.  We all know SoCal is where it's at, but where else would you live?  NYC-- Talk about a GORGEOUS autumn!! I love the beautiful streets, the hum of the busy city, the diversity, the cafe's, the shopping...:) I'd also be down to live in Boston, London, or San Fran.

3.  What is your life soundtrack? Or at least this week? This week it's a little of The Sounds, Florence + The Machine, Metric, Reni Lane, Gaga, Broken Bells, Mates of State, and Tommy James & The Shondells. I have music constantly playing--I have a playlist for almost every time of day, mood, occasion, etc.
 (You should really start cooking to Jazz, Ella & Billie are my girls!) 

4.  You decide to live on the perfect island and can have only 5 items - what are they (food and shelter are a given)? iPod/Stereo (music is must), Journal, Kindle, wedding ring, and my camera

5.  Which glee character are your most like?  And what song would you like to cover?

Ha! Do I watch Glee?! Do one legged ducks swim in circles? I L.O.V.E. Glee. Obsessed.  Character I'm most like? I'd like to think Finn, minus the guy part :) And I'd cover any of Lady Gaga's songs, because I love her.

The amazing thing about this jewelry line is not only how beautiful and unique it is, but the incredible story behind it. Janet Kinkade is a mother of 5 who lives in Alpine, Utah. She began making these charms as a hobby. As her daughters began wearing these charms, word quickly got out at how beautiful and unique they were. She began taking orders and building up a clientele. There were a couple of boutique owners who began selling her charms out of their shops and Janet's charms began to become quite a popular item. People from all around would drive into Alpine, Utah just to purchase her charms.

It was in December of 2008 that Janet had a jewelry show at her home and sold over $25,000 in charms and chains...in 5 hrs!! She got a visit from the city that day in which they told her she was in violation of every ordinance code and therefore could never have anything like that again from her home. She obviously was blown away by the response and knew that JK would be a perfect fit for a party plan company. She just didn't know how to begin.

In April of 2009, life for Janet would never be the same. One of the boutique owners had a niece who had made it to the top 10 on American Idol. Janet wanted to get Jewel Kade on her and so she and the boutique owner arranged for her niece (Megan Joy) to wear the charms on the show. Word got out to some of the celebs in the audience and Janet was bombarded with calls. People wanted her charms and she knew she had something that could be incredibly big!

Well, as you have it, she had a friend who knew a little bit about direct selling, but he knew of someone who was an expert. That was 10 months ago and here we are...the very beginning of company that will someday be a household name.

What a great story!  Thanks Sarah for bringing it to us.  These charms would make great Mother's Day gifts, bridesmaid gifts, girlfriend gifts... you get the picture.

1. Where did Born Ready come from?
Growing up in an active family of 5 brothers and 1 sister I learned a lot about living and LOVING life in the outdoors. I learned that this world we live in is truly remarkable, and the adventures that await us are endless.

At the tender age of 20 me and my husband opened up a bike and snowboard shop in a growing college town. After 15 years in business we decided it was time for a change. We sold our admired business and moved to a smaller town. This gave us both an opportunity to pursue something new. Something exciting! I currently have the AWESOME responsibility of taking care of 3 active boys ages 11, 8, and 2. We enjoy shredding the mountain slopes, hiking the areas wondered peaks, and dropping in on the coolest half pipes made to man. We LOVE to play outside!

This gave me the idea of making cool home grown threads for the little rippers in my life. I was so stoked about the idea of every little kid sharing his personality through the threads they wear that I took another step into the unknown. I started thinking from a little kids perspective. 2. Who is your muse?
My muse comes from a pretty rad lady named Mother Nature. She makes life just a little bit sweeter for all of us. If you ever just need a little pick-me-up or want to find answers to unanswered questions just open your front door, take a deep breath, and listen to what Mother Nature has to say. She’s pretty AWESOME!

3. What inspires you?
My family is my inspiration for everything I do. It is truly amazing having such a wonderful support group in my life. My kids come up with super fun tee ideas, my husband supports me no matter how crazy he may think I sound. From friends and neighbors to mothers and fathers - they all share a very special part in the Born Ready process.

4. What do you love to do in your spare time?
Is that word in a mother’s vocabulary? Well, like I say I love being outside and I love a good adventure. If I had a day to just hang I would climb the highest mountain with my guitar attached to my back and my notepad in my bivisac. I would sit, listen, and watch. I would sit some more, listen some more, and watch some more. And when the sun started to set I would ponder on life and how amazing it truly is. Spare time is not something I take for granted. Cherish each spare second of every day no matter what comes your way .

So, let's learn a little more about Danielle.

How did you get started in this jewelry biz?
I got started with jewelry about 8 or 9 years ago when one of my favorite necklaces broke. I sort of studied it to see if I could figure out how to fix it. It kind of snowballed from there. I have never taken any professional classes for jewelry making or wire wrapping, but I do come from a very artistic family. I would mess around with different crafts, although nothing held my attention that long, until I found jewelry making. When I was little we would visit my grandparents in Sweden for the entire summer. My grandmother also used to make jewelry and I would sit at her desk filled with hundreds of beads, and make jewelry (although they were probably not pretty!)Jewelry is my "fun" job- my "real" job is as a foster care caseworker for my county. It's tough most days, so making jewelry is so fun for me.



What are your top 5 movies?
My top 5 movies of all time- well, I don't know if they would be considered Top 5 for anyone else but for me it would have to be Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, Blow, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and 16 Candles. I could watch these over and over again, and I have on several occasions!


What do you look forward to every day?
What I look forward to every day is my son! He just turned 2 in August and he is amazing. The best is when I go into his room in the morning after I hear him yelling "Mommy!" and as soon as I open the door he pops up and says "I awake!"


What is the nicest thing someone did for you last week?
The nicest thing that someone did for me last week- A great friend of mine that I have been working with for years, decided to quit and gave me a week of her sick time!


Favorite three Etsy shops that we should know about?
3 favorite etsy shops-
First shop I discovered on Etsy was a leather shop called hollyhawk -amazing leather cuffs and accessories (totally agree, I love this shop). Also I just discovered MIXKO-amazing jewelry and BIG felt butterfly rings which I love (Holy Bananas! I love this shop, I am so glad you showed us!!!), and thirdly I would say Allyson Hill (love this shop and have wanted to get my car garbage bag - is it so nice?). She makes accessories for your car. I just bought an awesome car litter bag at a great price!!

This week's giveaway is from Heidi Devlin Design! We saw one of her creations last week on my etsy finds. This week she is giving away her Boo! pillow - just in time for Halloween goodness. I asked Heidi some questions just to get to know her a little better.


Tell us a little bit about yourself.

O.K. Here goes!....I am a very fortunate lady who lives with my family in the Southern California area!....I have been sewing & designing from a very early age,.... having had a mother who was a wonderful seamstress!....I think it may just be in my genes, since my mother loves to tell us stories of my grandmother working in the couture houses of Paris in the 1920's! :)


When did you start to create and where does the need come from?

For me, creativity has always been a "means to an end"!....While growing up, money was tight, so when you saw a piece of clothing or something for your home that you loved, but could not afford...you just figured out a way to make it yourself!....A "practice & philosophy" I have continued all my life!


Quilts or pillows? Pillows or quilts?

Even though I love making clothes, I have to say that "home decor pieces" are what I truly love to design & create!....A few years ago while living in a rural area of upstate New York, my daughters & I learned to quilt! It was really just a way to make friends, but now has turned into not only something I love doing, but a business as well!....I love designing simple, graphic quilts, but have to say that "pillows" are my passion!...I absolutely love making them!..The fabrics, the process & the end product!...And since I have my own decorating business, my pillows(& quilts) have found their way into many of my client's homes!...which is incredibly gratifying!

What is the best thing about where you live?

Like I mentioned before, my family & I live in a small town in Southern California. I believe the nicest aspect of living here is that everything is available!....the mountains, the beaches, the desert, etc!....I do miss true winter weather & lots of snow, but having a year round garden is lovely too!!!


What was your favorite Halloween costume as a child? Do you still dress up?

About Halloween....I LOVE Halloween since it is not only a delightful holiday, but is also my birthday!!....My favorite costume was being a "pioneer girl"?..I guess my love of the "Little House" books was my inspiration!...However this year, I will be dressing up as a "witch"!...which my 5-year old grandson thinks is just fabulous!


If you were a bird, which one would you be?

And if I were a bird?.....I would definitely be a "chickadee"!....They are just so resourceful especially during the cold snowy months of winter!....& pretty darn cute too!

When Josh isn't designing shirts, he can normally be found out in his huge garden. He loves to garden and is in the process of turning his two acre yard into a wild prairie area. (I want to see this!)
Ryan enjoys searching the internet in order to find interesting forums to post on and state his opinion.
Katie enjoys reading, and spending time with her two cats, dog and husband.



Why did the chicken cross the road?
Josh says the chicken crossed the road to avoid the meteor.
Ryan says it didn't cross the road.
Katie says it crossed the road to meet the rooster.

How did you get started?
I wanted to make a pearl necklace for my wedding which turned into a necklace for me and one for each of my bridesmaids. After that I started making more necklaces and earrings for my sisters and Mom.

What helps your creative process?
I am not sure I have a real creative process but if anything helps it ebay does.



Who would you just be tickled to see wearing your jewelry?
Reese Witherspoon, if she was wearing one of my necklaces I would die happy.


If you were a fruit, which one and why?
A pomegranate. They are red and delicious.
